Ride Reports from the meeting

June

Ride Reports and tall tales:

  • Most of us make day and lunch rides.
  • Martin Lewis, David Pell and Alan rode to the Angola Rodeo and had a very good time. The seating Capacity is 10,000 and it was full and with lots of people standing. The ride going to the rodeo was chilly with just a little rain and was very nice. The rodeo is a must do and we had a very good time.
  • Bobby Brooks and Bryant make a ride to Austin and rode the Twisted Sisters.
  • Alan and Laurissa made several rides over the past 2 months. First off we made a 550 mile ride to Moonshine, IL to eat a burger with friends. IT was very good.
  • Well, if we are in that part of the world we decided to head on up to Chicago and ride Route 66 from the beginning to Amarillo, TX and then home.
  • Dan, Kerry, Bill, Charles, Bobby, Alan and Laurissa Rode to Russellville, AR for some fantastic riding.
  • Billy Tate, Jack, and several other relatives made their annual trip to Harrison, AR for a week of comradery and riding.

April

It seems that march was another slow riding month.

  • Most of us did make some day and lunch rides.
  • However, Alan and Laurissa, with grandson Michael, made the trek to Devil’s Fork, AR to meet up with Steve Harrison and wife Pattie to view the Total Solor Eclipse. I know this is a non-event for some and that you can buy those solar viewing glasses and watch from your own back yard. In Our part of the world in MS you only got about 80% but thanks to Steve and Pattie’s Hospitality we had a FANTASTIC time plus a total. (By the way they did invite all of the club) Steve had his motorhome set up and served breakfast and lunch.

Steve also had an electronic telescope, with filter, set up that made this trip worthwhile. With this telescope you could see sun spots, ridges on the moon, Venus and Jupiter.

The weather going home made us glad we were in the truck. THANK YOU STEVE and PATTY.

  •  The March meeting will/may include a photo shoot .

January Ride Reports

Ride Reports and tall tales:

  • Steve drove to Ashville, NC for a small break from reality. They visited Biltmore and the many other things there are to do. The Blue Ridge parkway was closed in areas and their visit to Little Switzerland was some what lonely. Good times none the less.
  • Steve also wanted to share info on the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research reserve in Grand Bay, SW Mississippi. It is 18,000 acres of pine savannas salt marshes, bays and bayous. It has walking tails and is a very interesting place to visit.
  • Bobby the mile eater road up to MO to his dealer for service then road NE Arkansas then Louisiana, Texas and back home.
  • Alan and Laurissa made a few lunch runs.
  • Dan also made some RTE rides.
  • Ian wanted to give a shout out to Klim for making warranty repairs on his high mileage jacket. Good info to know.

November Ride Reports

BB November 2023 rides

Bobby Brooks        November 2023 rides
I have been neglecting sending ride reports so i thought i would send a short one to encourage others.
Most of us like to share our ride experiences with others although we don’t care to take time to write it all down.
I will offer the latest one which was a short 4 day ride into North Arkansas with a little of Missouri and Tennessee .
The trip started on the 16th with Bryant and I heading into Arkansas late morning spending the rest of the day cruising some interesting roads ending the first day in Malvern Ar.
The 17th found us riding around Eureka Springs on the Pig Trail and so many other great roads ending in Springfield Mo.
I had the 18th planned for Missouri and Kentucky …. but after several comments from Bryant about how great the previous days roads were we decided to retrace a portion of the previous days route ( yes those roads were that exhilarating ) ending the day in Paragould Ar.
The 19th had us aiming to cross the Ms river to ride NW Tenn ….. but as we were preparing to leave i noticed steel showing in Bryant’s rear tire and as you can guess our plans Changed. After a lot of phone time we carefully made our way to Jackson TN. to U Haul being as there were no motorcycle tire stores open until Tuesday and this is Sunday.
We managed to load Bryant’s bike into a truck and parted ways, him headed to Alabama and me back to Greenville, with no other mishaps and a few good roads for me.
Ihe itch is still with me so I will be leaving Tuesday the 4th of Dec.for a ride to the Mississippi gulf coast returning on Wednesday. Anyone interested is welcome to join for all or part and if there is a RTE or Just coffee planned let me know i’m still planning roads.
Hope to see you on the road
Bobby

  • David Seal had a business trip in Dallas so he decided to add some pleasure to it so he rode his bike. David had a great time riding for several days in Arkansas before making it to Dallas.
  • Dan likes to rub things in so he gave us more tales of his trip to East TN and then expected us to feel sorry for him because he wore out a set of tires!
  • Once again Bobby likes to impress us all with his trip reports. Bobby and his brother in law, Bryant, hit the road headed to North Carolina, South Carolina, VA, TN, then North GA. This included the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bobby stated that he had forgotten how great North GA was. He said that he did make a mistake though. On this trip he did not have dedicated destinations and that in the future he will go back to planning out his trip instead of just winging it. Then to make it worse he said he has another good trip to North AR for November.
  • Ian also had an epic 2 month trip up the east coast into Canada and the Cabot Trail. This was part of a 4 corner tour that gives you 2 years to complete the entire ride. He did have a mechanical issue when the drive shaft on his almost 135,000 mile bike needed a little care.
  • Not to be out done John took his wife and Mother in Law to Morocco. OK he did not ride his bike but he substituted a camel!! He told us of the exotic places they went and things they did.
  • Alan and Laurissa did not make a moto trip this month but they did make a trip with their son and grandson to West Va. Here they rode the famous Hatfield and Mccoy ATV off road trail system. They spent 5 days riding their dirt bikes and RZR’s on the hundreds of miles of trails through the very challenging coal country mountains. A fantastic time.

October Ride Reports

Steve started by talking about the weekend he spent at Barber Motor sports. Then Tommy, David Pell, Alan and Laurissa all jumped in talking about how good it was. Demo rides from about 7 manufacturers, stunt rides, flea market, flat track racing, vintage and side car racing, the museum and more.

Tommy told of the many RTEs he has made on his new ZERO.

Bobby Brooks, Mr. Mile Maker, made a 4 day ride to nowhere. He headed NE with no real destination but made NE Tenn, and NC. Rode all the good places we love going to.

Alan and Laurissa took a 12 day, 2,900 mile ride to PA and took some really, really good roads. Then on to Johnstown, PA where Flight 93 crashed on 9-11-2001, then to Amish country, Gettysburg National Park, and then on to visit a friend in Spring Mill, PA before heading home. Lots of things to see and do.

Cindy has a new bike and christened it by riding from Baton Rouge, LA to Fairfax VA to visit her sister. Day 1 and 2 she rode with Alan and Laurissa and then split with them and headed to VA. She did it right by camping on the way home. Good job Cindy!

September Ride Reports

It has been very hot and not many have ventured out, not even Bobby. However, a few did and here is their story.

  • John Wheeler is becoming a traveler and is planning a trip to Morocco.
  • Alan, Tommy, Laurissa Jack and Dan have made several uneventful RTEs the past month. Don’t ask about The Big Store in Ebeneezer. A new one that is worth the trip is Williams Good Ole Days Buffet in Mendenhall.
  • Alan and Laurissa rode to Belzoni to the Sky Lake board walk to visit a cypress swamp. According to Walt Grayson, a reporter on the channel 12 news, the state’s largest Cypress tree lives. Let’s just say it was not worth the trip.
  • For the complete stories and more, with photos read it on the web page.
  • And we need pictures of all the things you WITH THE BIKE IN THE PHOTO PLEASE.

August Ride Reports

It has been very hot and not many have ventured out, not even Bobby. However, a few did and here is their story.

John Wheeler made a 5 hour ride with a few friends, They headed north through Canton on back roads like Yellow Bluff Road to Lexington and Eden. They then looped back to Livingston for dinner before heading home.

Steve and a friend rode the Poplarville area.

Alan, Tommy, Laurissa and Dan have made several uneventful RTEs the past month.

Big news from Tommy as he unveiled his Zero adventure electric bike. It is very similar in size and weight as a GS 1200. Quiet as a Mouse.

Not to be outdone we have Steve with his “new” 1966 BMW R/ 27. It has a solid 18 HP and is putting lots of smiles on Steve’s face.

July Ride Reports

July Lunch Pictures

Ride Reports and tall tales:

  • Dan started out by telling us about his 3,200 mile trip to the Rally in Doswell VA. Does anyone take the short and fast way to their destination? NO, so Dan started out going a few hundred miles west to AR to meet up with friend, and honorary member Bill. Then they headed out through Memphis only on back roads and on to the rally. When traveling with others you always share the planning even if it takes you to places you have been but others want to see. Same here, so Dan and Bill had a great time taking almost a week to get there. The temps were mild starting in the 70s and peaking in the mid to high 80s with just a few showers. Once at the rally Dan and Bill enjoyed glamping in a big dog tent. There are too many things to include but meeting other riders, a K-1600 house party and Fantastic Music were highlights of the rally.
  • Alan and Laurissa made a short 2,600 mile trip to the rally. Just like Dan all back roads TO the rally with the first night in Anniston, AL. The next day we headed out and using only a compass, a first for me, we made it to Cherokee, NC and then stayed the night at Little Switzerland, NC. Never getting lost but at times we did not know where we were. Some rain and fog made for a long day but once there it was a resort with nice views and food. Day 3 we slept late and toured Little Switzerland before heading back out on the Blue Ridge Parkway in very, very heavy fog. After about an hour the fog broke and we enjoyed some great riding to our destination of Roanoke, VA. Lots and lots of wildlife. Day 4 was a down day for washing clothes and a very good local ride that included The Back of the Dragon. The hotel was great and we even had an underground parking garage that had convenient steps to the hotel and the room just a few feet from there. GREAT hotel. Next up was to finish the 477 mile Blueridge Parkway then great roads to Fredericksburg, VA to visit Morton’s BMW dealership. Then to the rally site. We too were glamping and enjoyed the 50 degree nights and mild 85 degree days. The rally may have been the best yet and we enjoyed it a lot. After the rally we headed to KY for a night and then ½ way home on back roads and the rest on the slab for a 750 mile day. WE HAD A FANTASTIC TIME.
  • Billy Tate, Jack Lee and Billy’s brother made their annual motorcycle trip. The tradition is to ride to Harrison, AR and then spend 3 or 4 days riding the best of AR. Hwy 123 and many favorites but a new one that they discovered was Push Mountain. A great road that is a favorite of sport bikes so weekdays are the best time to ride this one. The trip came and went much too quick but was another one full of memories.
  • Tommy is up next with his tour of Ireland. For those interested the company is Lemon Rock tours. They have guided tours or you can do like Tommy and do a self guided tour. Either way they make the route with destinations and you follow the GPS but can also make detours as desired. Tommy and friend Drew, along with their wives took this over two week trip. The roads were paved but very narrow, 2 track sheep “trails”. The sites were fantastic with water falls and castles. 60 degree weather with great food, drink and the people made this one of Tommy’s favorites! Tommy sent out daily updates and the word heavenly came up several times.
  • It is now Bobby’s turn and he loves to show most of us up. This was an out west trip that was 8,000 miles in 18 days. Bobby went with Bryant and as expected hit twisted sisters on through AZ and a working copper mine, Phoenix, Then on to Death Valley, Crater Lake, Glacier National Park, and Bend, Oregon before heading home. Bobby said he was glad to make it back to good old Greenville, MS.

Ian now wanted a turn to tell of his trip to the rally. For the first time Ian rode the entire Natchez Trace Parkway. Like most he commented that the northern end was the best. On through Nashville with lots of detours. He rode the Cherohala Skyway and the Dragon. This was his first ride on the Dragon and it was busy. He then hit the Blue Ridge Parkway where he came up on a motorcycle accident with injuries. Ian was another camper at the rally and had a very, very good time.

New to me 1967  R27 So far, 10 mile ride in local area. That old style seat was comfortable!

Bobby spring 2023spring 2023

  • Now this month David wants to brag on his new bass boat!!!
  • Bobby who is always doing something gave a report on his train ride. Bobby rode his bike to Longview TX to meet a friend and catch the Amtrack. From there they went to LA and then to Seattle. All was good until the weather changed their plans for them. From Seattle they were supposed to go to Chicago and then back to Longview BUT heavy snow stopped the trip. They were turned around and sent back the way they came. 9 days on a train in the snow turned into an unexpected adventure. Go to the web page for all the details and photos!!
  • Steve made his trip to Key West. Details on the web page.
  • Alan, Laurissa, Dan, Tommy and Jim made a RTE to the famous Nanna’s diner in Brandon. Don’t say it’s only 10 miles to Brandon because when riding with Dan there is no such thing as a short boring ride! Go to the Web Page.
  • Alan led todays lunch group about 18 miles south of McComb to the crash site of the Lynyrd Skynyrd airplane. Alan’s GPS loves to take real back roads complete with gravel covered bridges and pothole filled and cracked roads. We did make it. At the site there is a staffed area with volunteers and fans. They had a lot of stories to share about the band and of the crash. 20 of the band did survive and it was a somber but very nice memorial.

Bobby Brooks to Granada –  Day Ride_ Bobby Brooks

Billy Tate and his R1150RT work

Have been working on the r1150rt for several months.  Bought the bike with 20,000 miles on it and it was needing some TLC. Have done major cleanup and have been working on different parts of bike.  The latest job has been on brakes.  The picture below shows the brake fluid I got out of the master cylinders, brake lines and ABS pump.  Fluid has never been changed and as you can see; it was nasty.  If you don’t know what brake fluid looks like; it is clear.  Brake pads were good and may have been replaced but felt like brake lines were probably bad.  Replaced with Spiegler brake lines.  Definitely a work in progress but has been fun.  Thanks to Alan Henderson and Will Wicker for their input.

Ride Reports and tall tales:

  • The ride to the meeting was short but very nice.
  • What’s up!!!!!!!!! Not many rides this past month. HOWEVER, as always our man Bobby did make a great ride. Up the east coast to NY to Mount Washington, then Cape Hatteras, where he spent many hours waiting on the ferry, Moorehead and Boone NC. 3,000 miles in 10 days. BOBBY PLEASE SEND A RIDE REPORT TO STEVE!
  • Tommy made it to Nanna’s in Pearl for lunch and Richard and Dan made it to Meridian to Jean’s for some good eats.
  • And we need pictures of all the things you WITH THE BIKE IN THE PHOTO PLEASE.

September

Ride Reports and tall tales:

  • Ride to the meeting: The weather man said it was going to rain on us but it did not. However, because it was 180 miles or more the ride down was on main roads, it was enjoyable none the less. And the food was great.
  • Dan had the best ride of the month to Alpine TN with some friends for a week of fun. However, due to some sort of back hills code “what happens in Alpine stays in Alpine” so details of the event were classified. However, he did let it slip that he burned through a new set of tires.
  • The best lunch ride of the month was back roads to Forest to eat at the Garden Patch. Several rode their small trail bikes.
  • Bobby has many short excursions on his Honda 250. Looks like small bikes are taking over!
  • Ian loves to help with bicycle rides and races and this past month was a judge on a 3 day bicycle race.
  • Alan and Laurissa took a week long ride to Johnson City TN. They had a fantastic ride even though they were chased and caught by rain several times. Tons of twisty backroads that will put a smile on your face!
  • And we need pictures of all the things you WITH THE BIKE IN THE PHOTO PLEASE.

July  Does anyone remember going to the Rally?

Ride Reports and tall tales: It has been asked that I do not get into too many details because we want members to write up their ride reports and send to Steve to put on the web page. However:

  • Bobby woke up one morning with a wild hair and made a run to Key West.
  • Just when you think you have heard it all Bobby came up with this wild story about hitting a coyote. Yea right! But he has a picture just the second before the hit and then another photo of the critter tumbling behind him. Then he had another of the teeth marks on the radiator shroud of his bike.
  • Dan said that he has been making several RTLs a week. (Ride To Lunch).
  • Billy and Jack took the motor home and bike to Harrison AR for a week and had a good time.
  • The rally was in Springfield Mo this year and many of our group made it.
  • Alan and Laurissa made a short 4,000 mile ride to the rally and then on to Moab Utah. They had a very good time and you will see a ride report on the web page soon.

Almost Nashville

Bryant’s and my excursion started Saturday April 9th at 7am with me leaving Greenville and Bryant from Alabama to meet in Eupora Ms .

Leaving Eupora to travel down a few not straight backroads through Mantee to the Natchez Trace .

Our intention was to ride the Trace to Nashville Tn after lunching at the Cracker Barrel in Tupelo .

A pleasant ride continued up past the Tennessee river to find the Trace closed up to US 72 .

We started the standard detour but after a look at the GPS to find there are some single lane roads in the area so … a detour from the detour to reconnect to the Trace above us72 and on to almost Nashville .

As the traffic thickened we opted for a south east route to find roads we haven’t seen .

The day ended in Tuscumbia Al. And it just happened the motel we chose was packed with two wheeled machines as the evening continued .

Sunday started at 7am with our trek to find more roads we haven’t seen to rejoin the Trace south.

After two rode closures , a section of gravel we decided to backtrack from and several wonderful one and two lane roads to find the Trace west of Verona .

Leaving the Trace at Mathiston with a short stop to recap events of the ride we separated to start home.

My ride continued with a very strong cross wind  across the delta, I don’t know wind speed but did maintain a serious lean angle . Bryant said his ride to Alabama was nice but uneventful.

Alan and Laurissa go west in 2021-OUT WEST 2021

  • Tommy gave a ride report on his trip out west. Tommy gives us all ride ideas and this trip to Oregon with the wives flying in was a great example. He made it to Glacier National Park as well and at the last minute was able to get a pass to ride going to the sun highway. They had a great time.
  • Justin told about his weekend trip to Ground Zero. He had a good time and even had a room there. A few others made comments so be sure you put this on your list of places to go.
  • Dan told of his fantastic 3 week 7,000 mile trip out west. He and Bill even had to have new tires installed on the way back. They headed out to south Texas where they rode Big Bend, went to Hover Dam, Las Vegas, Death Valley. They road Pacific Coast Highway up to San Francesco and ate at Alice’s Restaurant. Also every day he would send out a ride report that included many great roads that they had been on. THANKS
  • Alan and Laurissa also made a trip out west. They started out at Galveston Beach, and road the Border to El Paso. From there they road great roads through AZ, NM, CO and WY. One day was spent riding a side x side On the Alpine loop and also made it to Coody WY for several days. On the way home they saw TONs of MS SATE fans with their happy faces on.
  • Paul rode in East TN and told of the good that time he had.
  • Fletcher made a duel sport and Jeep ride report that he took also out west in the black hills.
  • Steve Harrison made the trip to the rally but was not at the meeting to report. See below.

That Bad Weather Day (that wasn’t)

By Dan Stubblefield

The first ROM meeting of 2022 was looking potentially rough early on. Though you really shouldn’t trust an early forecast this time of year, Sat the 8th was proving to be particularly difficult to pin down in advance.

Yeah, yeah, “it depends on which weather source you use” (‘cause they’re all different) … but at least they’re usually somewhat close.

This one however, was NOT normal, in the sense that it was all over the map, all week, even when using my normally reliable site!

Early on, I saw “low to mid 50s and overcast”.  Hmmm, should be nice.

A day or two later, the high temps drop into the upper 30s, with a slight chance of rain.  Okay … looks like I’ll have to add to the wardrobe.

Next report?  Highs in the 40s, but a guaranteed rain!  Grrrr, ok, but NOW it’s gonna be more of a challenge instead of a care-free ride

Then, on Friday, I see a forecast of “windy, high 50s / low 60s, and slight chance of rain”.  Yay! Woot woot!

And … the day turned out great!

The morning’s ride was mostly overcast, but then the sun broke through during the lunch break and ROM meeting. I even saw the temp on my dash bump 70 for a brief period!

Whacky as it was, it just goes to show that if you live in Mississippi and don’t like the weather, hang around for a few hours. It’ll change   😉

January

  • Rides to the meeting. Today started out as cloudy, 40 degrees and the wind blowing.
  • Dan took a group down Hwy 433, to Satartia and Holly Bluff then Hwy 16 to Rolling Fork and then made a loop on Hwy 1 and 14 to Onward.
  • Alan and Laurissa went rogue riding to Flora and Edwards on 22. Then Hwy 80 to Vicksburg and then 61 to Redwood. The plan was to take 465 to Eagle Lake and then to Onward. Poor planning revealed that 465 was closed so a ride straight up on 61 was plan B.
  • On Christmas Eve Alan, Laurissa, David and Shawn Pell made it to Gramercy, LA. They helped the local community celebrate Christmas and guide Poppy Noel (Santa). This event is called Bonfires on the Levee. This event stretches 7 miles on the Mississippi River levee with bonfires laced with fireworks. A tailgate party with lots of fun with great friends was part of the plan. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

December

  • Dreary nasty day so everyone brought their car. (that hurts)
  • Dan reported that he had another busy month riding to eat with different friends.
  • Alan and Laurissa had a couple day rides and it seems like they are a magnet for getting flats.
  • Ian as always shames us with his adventures around the country. Even though his bike is under a no ride recall he has a rental bike and is keeping on keeping on. You the man!! Just bring us some photos!!!

November

  • The ride to Mammy’s today was great! All backroads with just a little gravel. Lots of twisties that kept it interesting and we were only 10 minutes late. Most of us have ridden by Mammy’s many times but did not realize they were in operation. They have a daily special (today was red beans and rice) as well as a long list of sandwiches. Their specialty is their homemade pies and cakes. This place is highly recommended. Nothing special on the way home but we did get rained on.

Other October ride reports

  • The ride to Birmingham was great. Dan always has a good route planed that includes lots of backroads. Lunch was in Coffeeville then off to Birmingham.
  • Justin and special spent several weeks in California at a bike event and then visited with friends. They did a lot of riding and commented how Hwy 1, PCH, never disappoints.
  • David went to the BMW Riders of Nashville rally and had a fantastic time. He led several different rides on the twisty backroads of KY.
  • Steve took a group of riders for a backroad ride along the Gulf Coast.
  • At this meeting Alan and Jack both took the monster R1800 for a test ride. There will be a ride report/ review on the ROM web page, go take a look!!!!!!!!!!
  • Tommy took a KTM out for a ride.
  • Alan and Laurissa rode to Georgetown KY to meet up with some friends at the Motorcycle Tourers Forum for the annual “founders feast”.

Steve’ Ride tthrough the Land Between the Lakes

Yes indeed. Great ride. Road what the local’s call the mini Dragon. TN 232. Then explored the land between the lakes staying off the trace road. Road 206 awesome. Did some stuff out of character for me. There was a ditch wash out across a road with about 5 logs in it. Road over them… Did not fall.
Lots of gravel, dirt and mix.

No pics. Phone tiewrapped to bike. Forgot mount

September Ride Reports

Ride Reports and tall tales:

  • The ride to Natchez was another great ride that Dan took us on. We can always count on Dan to find great roads. Natchez Trace, then got off on Old Port Gibson Road. Several wildlife sightings and lots of bikes on the road. It was a beautiful day and the weather was perfect. The lunch at the Magnolia Grill was good and the view over the river added to the enjoyment. And again, lots of bikes in the parking lot.

September Ride Reports Continued

  • Dan and Tommy made a lunch run to Vicksburg to eat at Rusty’s.
  • Richard rode to Brookhaven and had lunch at Poppa’s Buffet, good food.
  • Jimmy and Tommy rode to BMW of Pensacola for Jimmy to get the first service on his new bike.
  • Steve talked about his new Trail 125 and all the fun he is having with it. Steve and Tommy talked about new seats, sprockets and chains.
  • Alan and Laurissa made it to Mountain View, AR for a long weekend ride. FANTASTIC riding even made it to MO. Their GPS took them down a 10 mile dirt/ gravel road that turned into a rock filled cow pasture and then a road closed sign. After hitting a large rock and taking a quick dirt nap next to cow poo, they got back on the dirt road and back tracked to the paved road. However not far on the return leg they had a flat. Not a problem, a quick fix, but Laurissa was really worried because this was definitely miles away from anybody. All is good.

After a catfish dinner they enjoyed music at the town square.

Sunday they rode home and got rained on for several hours but the weekend was a very good one.
